It has been known under several alternative names including the “sacred heart diet”, “TJ Miracle soup diet”, “Russian peasant diet”, “ the Dolly Parton diet” and “the military cabbage soup diet”. But they all come back to the same system for quick weight loss.
The cabbage soup diet is a low calorie diet designed for quick weight loss. To follow the cabbage soup diet plan dieters make up quantities of the soup and follow a seven-day program. It is claimed that as much as ten pounds can be lost in this time. Critics of the diet point out that the weight loss is going to be mostly water.
Cabbage soup diet recipe
2 large onions
14-28oz canned chopped tomatoes
2 green peppers
4 stalks of celery
½ pound green beans
herbs, salt and pepper to taste
- Finely chop all the vegetables
- Mix together in a large saucepan and bring to the boil
- Simmer until vegetables are soft
Once the soup has been prepared store it in the fridge and heat up as needed. Some dieters find the soup tasty when it is cold. There are many different cabbage soup diet recipes that have developed from this basic one. These mainly involve adding different low calorie vegetables (not potatoes) or spicing up the soup with the use of various herbs and spices. Some cabbage soup diet recipes include the addition of dried soup mixes to boost flavor.
How to follow the cabbage soup diet
To follow the diet you drink as much of the soup as you want, in addition to at least eight glasses of water a day. Other zero calorie drinks are allowed. Each day in addition to the soup dieters eat
Day one: All fruit except bananas
Day two: All vegetables raw and cooked, including one baked potato in the evening with a little butter.
Day three: All fruits and vegetables except potatoes and bananas.
Day four: Up to eight bananas and up to eight glasses of skimmed milk.
Day five: Up to twenty ounces of lean meat such as chicken or fish and up to six tomatoes
Day six: The meat and vegetables (excluding potatoes) plus at least one bowl of the soup
Day seven: Brown rice, vegetables (excluding potatoes) and unsweetened fruit juice.
Risks of the cabbage soup diet
The cabbage soup diet is a low calorie diet that is designed to promote quick weight loss. It is not nutritionally complete and should not be followed for more than a week at a time.
One of the main problems that nutritionists have with the diet is that it is high salt but that is easily remedied by not adding salt to the soup. This can leave it tasting very bland.
