ATD: How Can I Gain Weight on a Low Sugar Diet?

I have a high blood sugar level and could be in the early stages of diabetes. My
Doctor has told me to not eat sugar for one month.I am underweight, normal would be 108 lbs and I am now down to 100lbs. How can I gain weight on a sugar free diet?  — Diane R.

Good question, Diane! The answer is that most foods provide us with calories, so eating more of many things can help you gain weight. Start with the food guide pyramid or the DASH diet, both of which lead you through planning a well-balanced diet without adding in sweets and “junk” food.
And you don’t have to read labels, scouring for tiny amounts of sugar that can be found in ketchup or bread–just focus on staying away from concentrated sources of sugar like candy, sodas, cakes with frosting, and sweetened juices.

You don’t mention your age, or how you eat normally, but if you’re middle-aged or older and already eat a healthy diet, the likelihood is that your doctor will have you control your blood sugar with an oral medication.
