ATD: How Does the HCG Diet Work?

I am currently on the HCG protocol, and the premise of the book is that the body has 3 types of fat. The first is normal fat, second is structural fat, and the third is abnormal fat. The hormone is supposed to release the abnormal fat stores your body typically wont release on a normal diet. Are there really 3 different types of fat or am I just losing weight due to the 500 calorie a day diet? I did lose 31 lbs in 43 days, but I know 5 of that was water, because I immediately gained that back. I would appreciate your comments. Jeff B.

Dear Jeff,

You are very perceptive! Yes, you are losing weight because you are on a very low calorie diet (VLCD) and you no doubt burn over 1000 calories more per day than you are eating. The premise of the HCG diet is that this hormone, present only during pregnancy, somehow helps promote weight loss. Rumor has it that the injections are from the urine of pregnant horses. There is actually nothing scientific to show any evidence of HCG aiding in weight loss–and indeed it sounds quite contradictory: Why would a pregnant woman’s body encourage her to lose weight?

As for the fat in your body, there are two types: subcutaneous (under the skin) and visceral (around and between the organs). Each invididual will lose fat from various areas of the body at different times and we have absolutely no control over this.

Sadly, once you begin to eat normally again there is little chance the weight will stay off, unless you change your eating habits for good. Good luck, and I hope you do!

I would be refreshed to hear an honest comment about the hcg diet that from someone with whom the hcg diet does not threatens their job security.

The same old eat right, and exercise to lose weight does not work for 87% of the people who have tried these methods. I do agree that once you lose all of the weight you want to with the hcg diet protocol, you will need to maintain a clean, healthy and, well balanced diet mixed with a solid exercise program in order to maintain your new hcg body.

So I say don’t knock it until you try it. I lost 41 lbs in 43 days, and completely transformed my body. This diet has led to now living a healthy lifestyle and helping others do the same.

Dear Colin,
I’m glad that once you lost all that weight you were able to then start eating healthy and exercising regularly to maintain the loss. In fact, less than 5% of the population keeps off the lost weight for more than a year. Your idea about exercising and eating right working for only 13% of the population is incorrect: it works for 100% of the people who DO it!
