ATD: I Can’t Diet or Exercise, How Do I Lose Weight?

Question:

I am a 34 year old woman with two children. I am 5 feet 3 inches tall and weigh 180 pounds. I like eating non stop. I’m always hungry always at night and I like chocolate, cakes, and chips, pasta, rice, and bread. I can’t drink more than 2 or 3 glasses of water a day and I can’t go to the gym because I have to watch my kids. Are there any good fat burning pills you can suggest? Sumru K.

Answer:

Dear Sumru,

No, I cannot recommend any fat burning pills. I’m sorry to disappoint you but there is no magic or easy way to lose weight. I suggest you decide whether you would rather eat all those yummy foods, or lose a few pounds. You can’t do both, and only you can make that decision. Your letter is full of excuses that have no merit and that will have to change if you decide weight loss is your priority. I would suggest you go for a walk with the kids in the evening instead of snacking–but my intuition tells me you would have a reason why that just wouldn’t be possible.

We all like to eat, we all have other things to do besides exercising. People who are successful at weight loss are those who have decided that looking and feeling good tastes better than anything on your list of foods, and have changed their “I can’ts” to “I’ll give it a try”.

I don’t know when this was posted, so I don’t know if you’ll read this, Sumru (please pass this on to her if you think it will help). Maybe other busy moms out there will read this and be inspired. My mom had the same problem. She homeschooled all three of us kids, and drove around all day making sure that we got out to our classes, exercises, and visiting friends. Now that we are older (I’ve moved out), she STILL does that, but has also taken on a part-time job. By the end of the day, she’s SO tired, she just wants to sit on the couch and eat a snack. BUT! There’s a solution. And you have to be ready to work hard when you don’t want to, and cut back on the sugars until you’re feeling good about your body (at which point you won’t really want as many sugars anyways!). You can’t go out and exercise? See how much money you’re spending on treats. Put all that and a little more towards a treadmill so you can be at home and still workout (even while watching tv, or the kids). Run or jog for thirty minutes every day to get started, or go for an hour long walk. Plus, there’s a HUGE range of exercises you can do at home with nothing but a floor mat and a couple of small weights! If you’re going to have sugar, have ONLY ONE and during the day when you need the energy, NEVER at night! Plus, go ahead and eat rice and pasta, BUT make sure you are using WHOLE GRAINS, which will give you fibre that helps clean out all that guck that’s sitting inside of you, and give you the vitamins you need! ALSO, have larger portions at lunch and breakfast, but just a little rice (or other carbs) at dinner (so it doesn’t just sit there and convert into sugar and fat). If you find yourself hungry for a snack at night, you know veggies are always good. You can also have a fat free yogurt, or some other healthy treat. You can even have cut up apple (it does contain natural sugar, so don’t do this all the time). I also have a hard time drinking enough water, but I Promise you that upping it to AT Least 1.5 liters a day will start to help soooo much! These small, SUPER EASY changes (eating the sugars at the right time of day, cutting back on them by having healthy snacks, eating the heavy foods at the right time of day, 30 minutes of exercise, drinking a little more water) will be a huge help, you may even start loosing weight, but most imporantly you’ll start feeling healthier. When you’re ready to loose weight, it’s often just much stricter version of this with more exercise and looking harder at what you’re eating, when you’re eating, and how much you’re eating. Don’t give into Excuses! My mom after severel months is feeling MORE energetic, WAY healthier, she has started loosing weight, and is looking terrific. I’m so proud of my mom for doing this, and it’s set an amazing example for me to eat healthy and right! Trust me when I say that your kids will thank you and be proud of you for being a healthier, better looking AND feeling person! GO AHEAD AND DO IT! :D
