Higher Rates of Breast Cancer in Obese Women
Researchers at the University of Granada published the results of their study showing a correlation between obese women and breast cancer. The study of 524 women with breast cancer included the participants’ weight status and the age of disease onset. The obese and morbidly obese women developed cancer at an earlier age than the women of normal weight. Morbidly obese women are more likely to develop breast cancer throughout their lives, although other studies have found the opposite to be true.
Obesity is not the only factor that instigates breast cancer development. Nearly 18 percent of the obese women had genetic components influencing their cancer. Women who began menstruation before 10 years old also had a higher incidence of breast cancer.
