The Cabbage Soup Diet (also known as the Mayo Clinic Program) is a 7 day plan which allows unlimited cabbage soup each day.

Other foods can be consumed but the only food that can be eaten in unlimited quantities on a daily basis is the cabbage soup (due to the few calories the soup contains).  Obviously, the other foods eaten during this period are small portioned low calorie meals.

Pros to Consider:

  • Due to the significantly low daily calorie intake dieters can expect to lose weight during the beginning of diet.

Cons to Consider:

  • The Cabbage Soup Diet has a very low calorie limit and is not recommended by dieticians. This diet can be very dangerous.
  • Side effects include headache and nausea from lack of protein and fatigue from low calorie levels.
  • There are several variations of this diet and no reputable source.


How Does the Cabbage Soup Diet Work?

The Cabbage Soup diet lasts for 7 days.

Conducted surveys showed most people had problems with the menu.  Some days were allotted for unlimited fruit along with the cabbage soup (not ideal because some fruits are very sugary and high in carbohydrates.)  Others allow for unlimited vegetables, unlimited rice, or unlimited bananas (separate days) along with the cabbage soup.

This is basically a "quick fix" 7 day diet for those looking to drop weight by eating a significantly low amount of calories.  This type of dieting doesn't appear to be viable for long term use due to the health risks of sustaining such a diet.
